The university system in Australia is based on the British university tradition but with elements derived from the United States and Europe.

The universities are part of the world wide network of universities and are member of such bodies as the association of Common–Wealth Universities. There are 39 universities in Australia, 37 of which receive funding by the government for teaching and basic research functions. These are four other small higher education institutes that also receive government funding. The number of international students increased from 14,000ni 1983 to 73,400 in 1998. The number of exchange agreements which universities administer increased from 423 in 1991 to 2000 in 1999.

The university teaching year operates over two semesters, beginning in late February and ending in late November. Universities operating the two semesters can often admit international students at the beginning of each semester, in February and in July. Teaching normally involves lectures, small group discussions and laboratory classes in sciences subjects.

UNIVERSITY QUALIFICATIONS

The initial undergraduate qualification is a bachelor degree which normally takes three years’ full-time study with a fourth year for an honors degree and which focuses on research.

Following the bachelors degree, many students take a more specialist graduate or post graduate diploma course of a year’s duration.

Masters degrees are normally entered after the initial bachelor degree and provide an opportunity for advanced study over a one or two year period.

The highest degree is the Doctor of Philosophy which is a research degree of three to four years and requires a good honors degree for admission.

GOVERNMENT ACCREDITATIONS

The establishment of a university requires an act of the state parliament and the public universities are accountable to the Government for all their activities. There is a very strong commitment on the part of the government to ensure the quality of education offered in the universities it funds.
Institutions wishing to enroll international fee-paying students must comply with a Federal Government Act, Education Services for Overseas Students (Registration of Providers and Functional Regulation) Act 1991. This ensures that all providers and their courses are registered with the Government, that ethical practices are followed, that students are en-rolled correctly and that the institution complies with the financial provisions of the Act.

PRIVATE BUSINESS COLLEGES

Private Business Colleges provide a dynamic part of the Australian education system. As well as excellent vocational courses, many private colleges now offer accredited courses which provide credit towards university degree programs.

Business Colleges have operated in Australia for more than 100 years. Leading colleges strive to maintain strong links with industry and business to ensure graduates are well prepared for today and the future needs of the commercial world.
Courses offered in private Business Colleges include: Marketing, Management, Computers, Travel, Hospitality, Secretarial studies and business studies.

Students may undertake studies at a variety of awards levels. Most colleges offer Certificate, advanced Certificates, Associate Diplomas and Professional Diplomas. The course lengths range from six months to two years.

When choosing a course, students should consider which other professional bodies recognize the college course. The institute of professional secretaries (Australia) and the Marketing Confederation of Australia are two esteemed bodies which approve courses at Australian colleges.

AUSTRALIAN COLLEGES

The benefits to students in choosing a private college in Australia are many:

bullet

Private colleges tend to be smaller than public institutions and can therefore provide greater
individual and personalized attention.

bullet

Well-designed courses provide a definite career focus for graduates and are responsive to the needs
of the international market-place.

bullet

Students can gain skills in a relatively short time which makes learning very cost effective.

bullet

The variety of courses allows for varying entry levels so that students who may not reach University
entry level requirements can prove themselves in other courses.

bullet

Successful completion of certain courses satisfies the minimum entry requirements of many
universities and could even give credit towards a degree.

When choosing a college, students should look for schools offering accredited courses which are recognized by industry organizations.
